Immokolee-"The Home Place"
Overview
Constructed in 1930 in the Mission Revival architectural style, Dorothy Binney Palmer's 18-room "Immokolee" was a stark contrast to the lavish sophistication of the New York high society that the socialite left behind following her divorce from George Putnam. As so, Immokolee epitomizes the intrepid explorer & naturalist spirit that Dorothy Binney Palmer embodied throughout her life.
Heiress to the Crayola crayon fortune, & newly divorced from publishing magnet George Putnam, Dorothy Binney Palmer designed her home amongst the farthest outstretches of Fort Pierce, and upon completion in 1931, declared it as “Immokolee.” The name Immokolee is derived from the native seminole language and translates as “the home place," or "my home."
Following Dorothy Binney Palmer's passing in 1982, Binney Palmer's grandchildren maintained the residence, and also completed several restoration projects in the 1980's & 1990's. The keepsakes that Binney Palmer acquired throughout her travels, & the famed souls who once socialized in the rooms of Immokolee are still displayed throughout the home she left behind.
Nearly 63 years after construction, Immokolee officially earned its place on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on July 29, 1994.
